Antique Chinese Lacquer Plaque, Kuang Hsu period, circa 1875

A handsome antique Chinese black lacquer plaque highlighted with gilt calligraphy from the Kuang Hsu period circa 1875. We are still searching for a translation of the four symbols which could be a variety of meanings including something as simple as a shop sign to a wise saying. Pieces such as this remain a distinctive element of Chinese life and are quite striking in person. It is interesting to note that at the time when it was made electricity was not widespread and the reflective nature of the gold decoration ensured the plaque could be read and understood even in low light.
