Antique French Quimper Cachepot Planter France circa 1890

A large antique French Quimper hand-painted earthenware cachepot from the Brittany region of France circa 1890. The scenes on either side of this ceramic planter from Brittany show scenes from every day life. We particularly like the wooden shoes known as sabots worn by both men and women as well as the stylized bull head handles. These pieces were always used to conceal a potted plants in a highly decorative manner and originated in the seventeenth century at the palaces of French nobility. The custom of having flowering plants in an interior spread quickly and the decoration of these containers became an art unto itself.
