Pair of Antique Italian Classical Terra Cotta Garden Urns Italy circa 1890

A pair of antique Itallian Classical terra cotta urns from a garden in Italy circa 1890. These beautiful urns have a Classical pattern taken from ruins in southern Italy around the entire body and stand on square bases. Each urn has a circular shape with a impressed design of equally spaced lobes around the entire top while the body of each urn has straight sides impressed with a design of adjoining arches similar to those seen on the Coliseum in Rome. The underside of each urn has a pattern of acanthus leaves on the curved section that give a sense of richness with their elaborate design. Each urn stands upon its separate base that allows water to flow freely when the urn is filled with plants that need watering. Both of the bases also have a circular design with a baluster form profile of circular shape. Because these urns were made to be seen from all sides the overall design embodies symmetry and balance that reaches to the ancient past for inspiration. The unique colour and wear on the terra cotta shows their time spent outside in the changing seasons. As the water flowed from inside the upper urn and spilled forth over the base they have become naturally multi-coloured. The change in colour gives these urns an appealing appearance and makes them excellent candidates to bring an air of timelessness whether they are used inside or outside.
