Pair Antique Dutch Two Arm Nickel Silver Sconces Holland circa 1910

A pair of antique Dutch two arm silver nickel sconces from Holland circa 1920. These are the classic Dutch style sconces originally seen in the late sixteenth-early seventeenth centuries in Holland. The style traveled to England and America along with the Dutch people who emigrated to these new lands. The use of silver nickel plated brass was important for two reasons-it was inflammable and therefore safe to use with candles and it could be polished increasing the amount of light reflected. These sconces may be used with candles and may also be electrified and hard wired into the wall. The boldly scrolled arms support a large bobeche that was used for dripping candle wax before smokeless and dripless candles were invented.
