Antique German Plaster Bust Germany circa 1890 Hohenzollern Collection

An antique German plaster bust of a character from "The Ring of the Niebelungen" by Richard Wagner, Germany circa 1895. This particularly arresting sculpture was deaccessioned from the collection of the Hohenzollern family of Germany and bears an inventory mark in indelible red paint on the reverse. The tilt of the head, the wicked grin, thick curly hair and pointed ears all depict one of the mythological denizens of Wagner's extraordinary world in marvelous detail. The use of plaster creates a distinctive chiaroscuro effect when seen in an interior and has been a favoured medium used by sculptors for centuries.
