Antique French Gilded Wood Sculpture of a Hand Held Torch circa 1885

A wonderful antique French carved and gilded wood sculpture of a hand holding aloft a flaming torch from France circa 1885. Please notice the resemblance to the Statue of Liberty that stands in New York Harbour that was a gift from the people of France to America and erected on 4 July, 1885. This realistic depiction in carved wood is quite entrancing to hold as the flames of the torch are rendered fully in the round as this piece is meant to be seen from any direction. It stands on a circular base with the wrist and hand enclosing the shaft of the torch as it flares upward and contains the blazing flame. The gilded paint has aged beautifully and gives a lovely depth to the surface. This piece is a wonderful artifact and may be displayed alone or as part of a larger collection of objects.
