Antique English Burl Walnut Box from England circa 1890

An unusual antique English burl walnut rectangular box from England circa 1890. Please notice that the broad expanse of the top has an inlaid border close to the perimeter in a multicolored arrow pattern with three different colors of wood. This geometric pattern laid against the organic quality of the swirls of the burl walnut creates an intriguing contrast. The four sides of the box also feature the same beautifully grained burl walnut even across the back meaning this box was created to be seen from all directions when it lays on a table. The top simply lifts up and is secured by a bullet catch as opposed to a lock and key. The interior is lined with the original red velvet and most likely contained writing paper and envelopes accessible to anybody who needed to write a quick note. Remember that at this time in England postal service occurred several times a day and many households maintained enough staff to dispatch someone to run a note or letter anywhere in the city or town. Now this beautiful box will be a beautiful addition to a cocktail table or sideboard where an interesting object is desired.
