Antique African Zanzibar Chest Trunk circa 1875

The unique appearance of this African trunk circa 1875 with its hardwood case studded with brilliant brass decoration is known as a Zanzibar trunk. Used by traders along the Anglo Indian shipping route these trunks were often full of exotic goods including spices and silks and gemstones. The individually decorated surfaces were kept brilliantly polished and enabled their owners to keep an eye on them even at a distance. Just like a modern day suitcase these Zanzibar trunks were specific to a particular owner and kept under lock and key when loaded onto a sailing vessel. Oftentimes these trunks were used by professional traders to safely house their wares as they traveled from port to port. These trunks now make excellent coffee tables and side tables as their rarity and unusual appearance make them an interesting focal point.
