Antique English Arts and Crafts Inlaid Square Oak Table, England circa 1890

The combination of oak, burl walnut and satinwood on this two tier Arts and Crafts period antique English table from England circa 1890 is mesmerizing. Not only did the artisan who created the design utilize the different colours of the wood to effect but included elegant decorative carving including a Celtic Knot pattern in each corner. All four legs as well as the edges of both the top and lower shelf are embellished with deeply incised carving that add to the visual complexity of the table. Because the table is finished on all four sides it is easy to imagine that it was commissioned to be used in an interior where it changed position frequently and needed to be seen from all directions with equal beauty.
