Antique English Georgian Oak Drop Front Secretary Bureau Chest Desk circa 1800

An antique English Georgian oak crossbanded with mahogany drop front secretary bureau chest desk from England circa 1800 having a slant front supported by lopers. This handsome George III period oak desk has a beautiful patina from years of waxing and polishing the oak and mahogany timber. Please be sure to use the enlarge and zoom functions offered on our website for each photograph to see the details of this English oak desk. Always designed to keep personal correspondance private this slant front desk when open reveals an array of cubby holes along with drawers faced with mohoany and crossbanded with satinwood along with a center cabinet door with a working lock and key. Notice how luminous the mahogany is compared with the rich dark color of the oak and how the interior would glow when lit by a candle and open fire. This contrast between the timbers was an essential aspect of the design and demonstrates what was necessary before the invention of electricity. The four drawers beneath the slant front all open to reveal ample storage with their original pulls and the entire antique English chest is elevated on bracket feet.
