Antique English "Johnstone Jeanes & Co" Mahogany and Ebonized Console with Drawer circa 1865

This elegant antique English mahogany console table circa 1865 is embellished with ebonized wood stringing. The elegant sweep of the legs showcases the dramatic curved profile while enhancing the rounded corners of the top and front of the legs. Please note the stamped maker's mark on the inside of the drawer on the upper right edge. "Johnstone Jeanes & Co 67 New Bond St London". John Johnstone ran the concern from 1842 until 1880 and his company was well known for using only the finest materials and employing the finest cabinet makers. A wonderful table made by Johnstone Jeanes is part of the Royal Collection Trust. This antique console table features a drawer across the entire front accessed by pulling gently on the underside. The drawer front itself is embellished with ebonized wood inlay centered upon a symmetrical medallion made of ten raised lobes forming a circle. The contrast between the lustrous mahogany and the lush midnight black of the ebonized timber is quite striking. Note how the medallion motif seen on the drawer is also repeated on each side support in a slightly different form to equal effect. Even the front foot beneath the leg is ebonized giving the entire piece the impression of being slightly suspended above the ground. This antique console table was designed to be seen from any direction with equal allure given that even view maximizes a dramatic presence.
