Antique English Painted Writing Table Desk, England circa 1880

The handsome expanse of this antique English writing table desk from England circa 1880 offers a truly useful surface as well as storage. The four turned legs feature excellent proportions in relation to the width and height while the four drawers all retain their solid cast brass handles that allow easy access to the interior. This antique writing table desk was designed to either be seen in the centre of a room (that is why it is finished on all four sides) or used against a wall with equal facility. The top extends slightly beyond the base and encloses a beautifully detailed full leather writing surface with blind fret tooling applied by hand around the entire perimeter. The subtle change between the painted finish and the creamy quality of the supple leather makes an indelible impression. Whether using a keyboard or a pen and paper the richness of the leather has a luxurious quality that adds a delightful element when seated. Please note that the opening for a chair is quite large measuring 24" wide x 27 1/2" high from the floor to the underside of the top.
