Antique English Scorched Bamboo Hall Stand Mirror circa 1870

A classic antique English scorched bamboo hall umbrella cane stand coat hat rack circa 1870. The use of real bamboo assembled to create a sturdy hall stand was an essentially English and French reaction to the love of all things exotically Oriental in the late nineteenth century. The large original mirror set in the center was necessary for checking one's appearance before emerging out the front door while the separate arms for hats and coats enabled outerwear to be kept handy. The iron recess enclosed at the base kept rain water from dripping onto the floor while keeping canes and umbrellas orderly. Please enlarge the photographs to see all the details in closeup.
