An antique French Directoire Empire period walnut fire screen with a removable frame from France circa 1795 now covered in a striped silk from Brunschwig. The handsome clean and classic lines of this antique firescreen reveal the simplicity in vogue at the end of the eighteenth century. Firescreens were always used during the summer months to cover up the open hearth and provide another decorative element to a well furnished interior. This French firescreen is notable for retaining its original interior screen frame that is lifted out when a new cover is desired.
