Antique French Directoire Empire Period Painted and Gold Mirror France circa 1800 (32"W x 45"H)

An antique French architecturally inspired Directoire Empire period painted and gold leaf framed mirror from France circa 1800 surrounding the original mirror glass that features pilasters in faux painted porphyry. The color purple throughout history has symbolized royalty and porphyry, originally found in Egypt, was brought back to Europe to be used in the construction of important buildings and famously used for Napoleon's sarcophagus. The handsome architectural design of this antique French mirror is quite striking in its modern aesthetic. The pair of pilasters that frame the mirror appear to have the mirror suspended in space between them.
