Antique French Garden Slate and Iron Sundial circa 1890

An antique French working sundial originally placed in a garden circa 1890. Please notice the arresting combination of the hand hewn piece of slate used as the base and inscribed with the lines ending in Roman numerals to delineate the hours. The metal triangle affixed in the centre of the piece would cast a shadow as the sun moved across the sky that enabled any person to tell the time. In three of the corners there is a five pointed star but the fourth has been lost as the slate has broken off. The date of 1859 has been hand etched and the initials T.H. are plainly visible. The original square shape of the slate has been softened by the passage of time. This rare example of outdoor garden sculpture retains its allure and will be as fascinating viewed indoors on a display surface as it will be if used once again outside in a garden setting.
