Antique French Henri II Style Carved Oak Pair of Armchairs France circa 1880

The generous scale of these antique French armchairs from France circa 1880 hearkens back to the original Henri II period (1547-1559) when furnishings were on a grand scale not only to fit into vast interiors but also made to encompass the sitter in warmth and comfort. Please notice the tall square backs that allowed for an extravagant expanse of imported hand woven fabric to be on display but also the fully upholstered arms that extend the full length from back to front. These arms are extremely comfortable and again allow for sumptuous fabric to be used and admired. The robust carving on the legs and stretchers features an architectural sensibility with an emphasis on balance and symmetry. The oak has been lightened to a pale colouration in order to heighten the effect of the carving and the fresh monochromatic upholstery has been chosen to complement the timber. The front legs on both chairs retain the original casters that enables the chair to be moved easily across a room.
