Antique French Louis XVI Neoclassical Walnut Brass Chest Commode Marble Top circa 1790

This Neoclassical Louis XVI period antique French walnut commode chest circa 1790 has a marble top along with five drawers all embellished with brass detailing. The elegant simplicity of this late eighteenth century French chest of drawers results from the Neoclassical style which swept through Europe after the discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy. Please note the rounded front corners not only on the marble top but also the walnut corners of the chest and the four tapered cylindrical legs. This Louis XVI chest has an abundance of gilded brass detailing across its surface in order to give it an amazing sparkle in an interior with the only light coming from an open fireplace and lit candles. Even the sides feature the brass decoration in addition to the matched walnut as this chest was always in a well to do household and designed to be seen from both sides as well as the front. The top level has three drawers above two lower drawers that extend the width of the chest with each drawer having its original hardware. Please enlarge all the photographs to see the sumptuous details and also the reverse of this antique French walnut chest to see the hand construction and original marble top with its hand cut back.
