(On Hold) Antique French Neoclassical Glazed Walnut Bibliotheque Display Cabinet Bookcase circa 1875

A handsome and well proportioned antique French Neoclassical Louis XVI style walnut bibliotheque circa 1875. Please notice the luscious walnut used in the creation of this impressive piece of late nineteenth century French cabinet making. The substantial crown as well as the upper and lower sections are this walnut bibliotheque are of breakfront form which means the centre section is prominent and the left and right sections recede slightly to give a sense of movement to the facade. This is an architectural technique perfected during the Baroque era in Italy and exported around the entire world. The crown of this bibliotheque has an inverted cascade of moulding that brings the eye to the upper cabinet section where there are four doors each with the original glass. Each of the doors have a different treatment to the moulded edge that encloses the glass with the centre door framing a single piece of glass with the left and right doors having glazing bars that divide the door into three separate pieces of glass. Behind each of the doors the display cabinet space is able to be customized by the use of adjustable shelves. The lower section has a moulded top edge that follows the profile of the top with its breakfront design. There are three drawers located directly below each door that are each the same width as the upper display doors and have a distinctive moulded edge that balances their profile with the entire bibliotheque. The elegant brass hardware allows access to each drawer as well as the individual locks on all six of the doors. The three lower cabinet doors each have a recessed panel of figured walnut surrounded by a moulded edge and each open to reveal ample space for storage. The base stands on refined bracket feet that elevate the piece visually as well as actually. The sides of the bibliotheque have been attended to as well and show the same use of moulded edges and recessed panels with attention to scale and proportion as the front. This detail is important because it demonstrates that the cabinet maker was aware that the piece would be seen from all three sides and it was necessary to ensure a felicitous appearance regardless of the direction from which it was viewed. This bibliotheque will be a wonderful focal point in any room and may contain a wide variety of books and objects to be displayed and enjoyed.
