Antique French Neoclassical Louis XVI Style Mahogany Brass Demilune Console Table France circa 1820

A handsome Neoclassical mahogany and brass Louis XVI style demilune console side table from France circa 1820 inlaid with satinwood detail. The elegant lines of this French console table showcase the use of restraint in design so very popular at the end of the eighteenth century. Superb mahogany timber is inlaid with satinwood in a symmetrical pattern redolent of neoclassical motifs. The pale color of the satinwood gleams brightly against the darker color of the mahogany and enhances the curved front of the demilune console table shape. All three legs have a straight tapered form ending in a brass cap known as a "sabot" after the shoes worn in Brittany. The use of brass was a common feature of better quality French furniture as it ensured the timber was protected and that an edge and foot of various furnishings reflected the light from a fire or flame. The front edge of this antique French console is also embellished with a band of brass. Please be sure to enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see the slight dents to the brass band indicating its age achieved through years of a life well lived. The half moon shape of the top is also embellished with an inlay of satinwood following the same demilune shape. The excellent proportions and size of this table make it perfect for use in a variety of interiors.
