Antique French Oak and Iron Trestle Table from France circa 1850

An antique French solid oak and iron Spanish Italian style trestle table from France circa 1850. The wonderfully substantial thickness of the oak timber used for the top and vertical supports gives this table its exceptional appeal. Please be sure to enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see the details of construction and the beauty of the oak timber and iron supports. Each end of the top is finished with single piece of wood that runs perpendicular to the length of the table in order to keep the table surface flat. The purpose of the two iron supports beneath the top is structural as they are screwed into the stretcher base and the underside of the top. But the French being the French the iron supports are also beautifully forged by hand with a slight ribbon twist design and flared ends to give a finished appearance. The contrast between the oak and the iron is quite handsome and unique to this type of table originally invented in Italy that quickly spread through France and Spain. Eminently useful this table remains perfect for dining, behind a sofa or in an entry hallway.
