Antique French Square Iron Lantern circa 1890

An antique French square iron lantern circa 1890. The handsome classic profile of this French lantern may be used inside or outside as it has been rewired for American electricity. The square top has a Mansard style shape with a circular structure hiding the wiring. As the top slopes outward there is a raised edge to keep wated from reaching the inside when real candles were used for illumination. The widest reach of the lantern also has a flared rim again to propel rain away from the fixture. Please be sure to enlarge the photographs to see the orignal surface and construction details of the iron structure. The base is also square and is a smaller size than the top which makes each of the four sides taper inward with one of the glass fitted doors able to be opened to change the bulbs. In a decorative flourish there are four scrolled arms of forged iron that meet at a single point with a large finial that finishes the lantern.
