(On Hold) Antique French Walnut Desserte Console Buffet circa 1895

This handsome antique French Henri II style walnut desserte console buffet from France circa 1895 was considered part of a well furnished household in Belle Époque France. The architectural lines of the carving first appeared during the reign of Henri II when furniture echoed the impressive designs seen both inside and outside. The front two legs resemble turned columns with a graceful elongated silhouette while the back legs are actually modeled after flat pilasters embellished with symmetrical fluting. The apron features a pair of drawers each affixed with the original hardware and has a shaped front similar to ceiling moulding extending across the entire front and sides. The center shelf and the lower shelf are all suitable for display and serving and the entire piece has a wonderfully rich patina from years of waxing and polishing. The great surprise about this French console desserte is what lies concealed beneath the top. When the top surface is lifted the original marble top is revealed along with a simple mechanism that locks a small shelf into place. Most often used when serving after dinner drinks and confections the marble surface was perfect for poured liquers while the lower shelves easily held plates, cutlery and fresh linen. Perfect whether open or closed this uniquely French console desserte continues to offer a myriad of uses for modern living.
