Antique German Louis XVI French Painted Table Desk with Drawer circa 1790

A handsome antique German Louis XVI period painted table circa 1790 having a large drawer. The elegant Neoclassical lines of this table with its straight tapered legs and symmetrically shaped top are enhanced with the refreshed painted finish. Please enlarge the photographs to see the details of the four corners that each have a scalloped shape. The most interesting aspect of this table is how the top may be removed from the base as it is secured by four pegs (teo on each side) made entirely by hand. This feature of a separate top and base was important and indicates the table was always designed to be moved about an interior whether closer to a fire in the winter for warmth or to an open set of doors or windows in the summer heat. Notice that the table is decorated on all four sides and will accommodate four chairs for either a meal or a game of chance. The scale of this table also makes it an excellent choice between two chairs or at the end of a sofa. We also think this antique painted table would be a smashing bedside table or writing table desk.
