Antique Henri II Carved Painted French Oak Partner's Desk, France circa 1890

This terrific carved and painted antique French oak partner's desk from France circa 1890, has a leather top of full grain cowhide used in Italian sports cars and is notable for its exceptional colour and plushness. The unique carved decoration is inspired by motifs that first appeared during the life of King Henri II (1519-1559). Because this is a true partner's desk it has working drawers on both the front and rear sides as well as having decoratively carved end panels. The top edge of the desk showcases a rounded profile embellished with a series of curved carving that extends to all four sides. Raised upon a plinth base the desk has three sections as the top writing surface is supported by the two individual pedestals making the desk easily moved to any space. The uncompromising symmetry of the decoration is especially powerful as all twenty two drawer fronts (eleven on the front and eleven on the rear side) feature a wonderful crossed and threaded horizontal medallion with the lock hole placed directly in the centre. A key is inserted into each of the drawers to pull it open and push it closed. Also each of the end panels has a symmetrical pattern with a circular medallion in the centre surrounded by a flowing vine. Not only is this antique French desk beautiful to see from every direction it is also fully functional and ready to be the focal point in an interior.   Chair opening 23" wide x 25" high
