Antique Italian Neoclassical Gilded Mirror from Italy circa 1790 (24"w x 58"h)

This elegant antique Italian gilded mirror from Italy circa 1790 features a unique motif in the upper section known as a "baldachin" after the famous structure at St. Peter's in Rome. Set behind the baldachin is an oval piece of mirror that is entirely separate from the larger original mirror plate below so this mirror gives two reflective surfaces. The cartouche at the top is made of five large scale flared palmettes frame the baldachin and lead the eye to the curves of the shoulders of the frame. Please take a moment to enlarge the photographs to see the exquisite design of the floral decoration upon the frame. The natural organic shapes of the foliage accent the symmetry of the frame and give a lush impression. The original mirror embodies the passage of time and its smoky surface adds mystery and allure when it reflects the room where it is placed. The tall and slender profile of this Neoclassical mirror is a part of its elegant impression as is its unusual combination of decorative elements.
