Antique English Oval White Pottery Meat Platter circa 1875

An enormous antique English ironstone meat platter with the famous "tree of life" pattern from England circa 1875. The simple white cream colouration remains eternally popular and the platter has a stamped mark on the reverse. The reason for the "tree of life" impressed pattern ending in a deep well at the base of the trunk was to capture the juice from a joint of meat or poultry as it was carved while sitting on a sideboard. The "tree of Life" pattern refers to the interconnectedness of all living things and is a recurrent pattern in all of the world's societies.
