Antique English Painted Carved Oak Serving Console Table from England circa 1870

This enchanting antique English painted oak serving console table from England circa 1870 was used in a country house in the north of England with the top painted in a fanciful depiction of the house set within its garden like grounds. The scene on the top of the table incorporates an architectural likeness surrounded by the beauty and naturalness of its setting. The skilful quality of the painted scene has a certain charming naivete indicative of its rustic origin especially when seen in contrast with the excellence of the carving on each of the end supports. The entire top is surrounded by a rope twist border that has a symmetrical balance as the border reverses direction in the centre of the front, back as well as each end. The table has a trestle configuration with the two vertical ends connected by a horizontal stretcher. Because the lavish carving is able to be seen from either end it is obvious the table was originally conceived to be approached from the side so the carved motifs could be fully visible and appreciated. Each of the vertical end supports have an unsually shaped profile with a sloping edge that encloses a profusion of carved details that bear close examination. Please use the zoom and enlarge functions offered on our website to see the excellent carving as well as the three dimensional effect. Whether used in a hallway as a console or entry table or as a sofa table this is a table with great presence because of its unusual painted top and notable carved details.
