Majolica Barbotine Ceramic Jug with Handle France circa

A Barbotine Majolica glazed ceramic jug with a handle from France circa 1870 depicting a figure from Brittany on each side rendered in raised sculptural detail. A large scale, this jug is perfect for display on its own or for actual use as a water or milk or juice jug. Because it is glazed on the inside it will also hold water for fresh flowers. The gentleman is lighting a pipe on one side while on the other the lady is indulging in a pinch of snuff. The realistic depiction of a daily activity in 19th century France is quite amusing while the jug itself remains useful and handy.
