Antique Italian Baroque Period Painted Overdoor circa 1750 Mounted as Sculpture

A pair of spectacular architectural fragments removed from a palazzo in southern Italy. These pieces date to circa 1750 and were originally part of the moulding encasing the main entry. The dramatic quality of the carved detail is enhanced by the hand painted decoration. The artisan designed them to take advantage of the light available in the space as well as the contours of the carving. Please remember that these pieces were mounted horizontally and now they are seen vertically. This modern display choice emphasizes the change in scale from wide and rounded at the base to ethereal and slender as they move upward.  They are now mounted on custom wood bases hewn by hand from the same aged piece of timber. This contrast between hand made work by man and the power of wood created by nature and the passage of time create an especially compelling effect.
