This striking Neoclassical antique Italian painted urn vessel circa 1870 possesses an architectural grandeur unusual for its scale. The tringular base supports a trio of shaped bird legs each grasping a sphere symbolizing the Pearl of Wisdom or the Universe before ascending to feature the head of an eagle. The symbol of an eagle was often used to signify power and dominion because of its fierce nature and far ranging reach of its flight used to protect its territory. Set symmetrically around the shaped urn the eagles enclose it firmly. The separate lid lifts off to reveal a storage space inside. Designed to be seen from all directions with equal visual impact this is a powerful decorative object because of its subject and skilful construction.
