Antique Chinese Red Lacquer Altar Buffet circa 1875

This miniature table top antique Chinese altar table buffet circa 1875 dates from the Kuang Hsu period and is correct in every detail to a full scale example. Please notice the lavish carved decoration and the red lacquer surface that retains traces of the original gold highlights. The various symbols appearing on the pair of cabinet doors include vase of flowers each chosen for its auspicious meaning. The colour red in China is always a sign of good fortune and the inclusion of such a piece inside a household was a continual reminder of both reverence to the past as well as angoing good fortune. The raised scroll ends on the top surface refer to knowledge and learning while all three of the drawers and the two cabinet doors retain their original metal pulls. Even the sides feature decoration indicating this Chinese altar buffet was meant to be seen from all sides. The highly decorative nature of this piece was an important element of its desirability and remains important when placed in a modern interior where its sculptural shape and rich finish will add a note of foreign intrigue.
