Antique Chinese Table Top Jewelry Box circa 1875

Almost a puzzle box! This handsome red lacquer antique Chinese jewelry box circa 1875 has a sliding lid adorned with the most auspicious Chinese symbol, a bat with outstretched wings. Notice how there is a centre medallion on the sliding top surrounded by a series of four circular bats all carved and raised to be above the surface and embellished with golden details. Yes, the top of this box actually sliders forward and backward to reveal a shallow resting place ideal for necklaces, special notes and other treasures. The lower section features a pair of cabinet doors which open to reveal two drawers each affixed with a metal pull. The front of each cabinet door contains a scene with a tall figure set within a landscape all heavily carved and decorated to be be visible. Please remember when this box was created the only available light was from fires, candles and oil lamps so highly reflective and deeply carved surfaces were essential. The scale is perfect for a table top or shelf where its valuable contents may be safely stored and easily accessible.
