Antique Italian "Cornucopia", Symbol of Abundance, Italy circa 1780

Antique Italian carving of "Cornucopia", a painted, gilded, and carved symbol of Abundance from Italy circa 1780. This unique representation of an age old idea takes the form of a three dimensional sculpture affixed to a wooden plaque. The basket with its striped appearance is fully modeled as are the natural grains seen flowing from the large open end of the cornucopia. By setting the cornucopia in the centre of a black painted panel enclosed by a gilded and carved moulding the eye is focused on the sculpture not only as a decorative device but also as an ideal symbol of Nature's abundance.
