Dutch Painted and Gilded Oak Bombé Commode Chest of Drawers, Holland circa 1850

A beautifully sculptural antique Dutch painted and gilded bombé commode (chest of drawers) from Holland circa 1850. Please notice the elegant shaped top and the way the drawers and sides cascade down and flare out from the top. The widest point at the base is supported by two fully articulated claw feet each grasping a half sphere. The lowest apron is centred on a pair of facing double leaf scrolls and the edge of the apron has a pronounced lip. All of these sculptural elements are rendered in high relief and provide a dramatic surface for light to illuminate. A beautiful commode such as this would often be used in a bedroom or drawing room for its handy size and elegant appearance.
