Antique Chinese Elm Altar Table, Kuang Hsu Period, China circa 1875

An antique Chinese elm table from the Kuang Hsu period in China circa 1875. The elegant lines of this table combined with the pale finish that retains traces of the original lacquered surface are immediately apparent. This table was originally designed and constructed to be used in the centre of a room when needed or to be placed against a wall at other times. On one of the horizontal supports the table has a red wax seal affixed by the Chinese government attesting to its age and permission for export. Whether used in a contemporary interior because of its refined simplicity or placed in a more traditional space the spare visual of this table gives it a handsome desirability.
