Antique French Empire Walnut Chest of Drawers circa 1830

This handsome antique French Empire walnut chest of drawers in the Empire taste circa 1830 has a restrained decorative façade emphasizing the beauty of the timber. The upper section contains a drawer opened by pulling gently on the underside. Notice how the top drawer extends forward beyond the lower three drawers and appears supported by the pair of half columns on the left and right side. These tapered columns flank the recessed drawers and are entirely architectural in appearance with a simple capital and circular plinth base. All three of the lower drawers have a pair of ring pulls as well a centre escutcheon and the bronzed metal provides a lovely contrast to the rich patina of the walnut. Both sides feature a recessed panel for added interest when viewed from an angle and the top surface has a lustrous polished finish. The last photographs of the rear of the chest show both the original antique construction as well as the pair of labels indicating the chest was stored at some point in the city of Pau located in southwest France adjacent to Bordeaux.
