Antique French Gilded Lyre Musical Instrument, Belle Epoque circa 1890

A delightful antique French carved and gilded wood lyre musical instrument circa 1890 with handsome details from the Belle Epoque period. Please notice the pair of phoenix heads that face left and right at the top of each scroll and the three wire elements relating to a lyre in the centre. This piece was originally created for the top of a piece of furniture where its symmetrical shape and fanciful details were designed to focus attention. The outward facing bird heads were there symbolically to offer protection and to ensure the smooth playing of music. The curved elements are broad at the base but narrow as they ascend to become the neck and heads of the birds. The circular base was affixed by a dowel through the base and ensured its secure position at the top. This unique sculptural object from late nineteenth century France possesses a unique allure and presence and because it is finished on both sides is ideal to be viewed from any direction.
