Vintage German Ceramic Vase, Maker "Bay" on Base, Germany circa 1900

The bold sculptural surface of this German vase vessel Germany circa 1900 has both representational motifs in the pair of facing birds as well as organic, naturalistic designs that extend around the entire exterior of the piece. This was always designed to be seen from all directions and the richness of the colour was chosen to add to its dramatic impact. The combination of blue and green as well as the motifs are reminiscent of Mediterranean ceramics such as Bitossi from Italy and the famous Mdina glass from Malta with their cheerful boldness that complements the southern light. The underside of the base has raised lettering with its country of origin, Germany.
