Vintage Italian Handmade Oval Gilded, Silvered Metal Mirror, Italy circa 1950 (26 1/2"w x 45"h)

This unique vintage Italian mirrorin an oval shape from Italy circa 1950 celebrates the union of a couple in marriage using the art of metal working that has been practiced for centuries. The wonderful combination of the oval shape along with the decorative embellishments done in both silvered metal as well as brass gives a delightful contrast. Set above the oval is a whimsical butterfly on wing while at the top of the frame perch a pair of owls whose upper body including the eyes are made of brass that has mellowed to a lovely rich dark patina. The owls each have one wing outstretched while standing next to each other with one owl being above the other. This configuration is very similar to that seen in France, especially in Normandy, where a pair of doves with spread wings and one dove higher than the other is a traditional sign of matrimonial fidelity and harmony. This mirror being from Italy a pair of owls, symbols of the wisdom of the Goddess Athena are used instead of birds. To reinforce the theme of the abundance of nature there are numerous pears as well as multiple open flower blossoms placed around the frame and these naturally organic shapes contrast well with the lovely curve of the oval frame. Please be sure to enlarge the additional photographs to see the handsome details that give this mirror its special appeal.
