Large Antique Italian Leather Box with Decorative Brass Studs circa 1900

A large round antique Italian leather box circa 1900. Please look at the intriguing circular shape to both the top and the bottom. This shape is most unusual as most storage pieces were rectangular. The base is actually a dish of wood for stabilizing with the leather sides rising vertically to meet the lid. The large expanse of leather has been stitched together and one of the four prominent circular medallions has been placed on top of the seam to minimize its appearance. Notice that around the base then at the top of the bottom section and then again around both the lower and upper edges of the lid there is a strip of applied leather trim affixed with a row of spaced nail head trim. This use emphasizes the circular quality of the design. Symmetrically spaced around the body of the lower storage section are four circular hammered brass medallions set atop two concentric pieces of leather each outlined with a circular row of nailhead trim. The raised profile of these decorative adornments gives a sculptural dimension to this piece. The top of the lid is a wonderful arrangement of brass medallions each with a decorative raised profile set within a border of nailhead trim. The centre medallion is raised and centred on two pieces of concentric elevated leather again defined by a border of nail head trim. The lid lifts off to reveal a substantial storage area with an elevated rim that secures the lid. This is a wonderfully decorative box that has a fascinating arrangement of materials to give it a unique appearance.
