Large German Pewter Coffee Pot circa 1900

A large German pewter coffee pot circa 1900 with orginal wooden handle. The distinctive shape of the body identifies these as used for coffee as opposed to a shorter round pot used for tea. The use of a wooden handle also indicates this use as a pewter handle would have quickly become uncomfortable when the hot liquid filled the pot. The wooden handle remained cool to the touch no matter how long a hot beverage was served. The hinged lid on the larger pot has a stylized lion finial at the top to provide a decorative touch while the end of each long spout features the profile of a ferocious beast. This motif is typical of pewter coffee pots from this area of Europe.  In comparison with porcelain and pottery pewter has significantly lower heat conductivity and therefore provided a much better guard against heat loss.
