Large Louis Philippe Antique French Mirror France circa 1880 (49"w x 65 1/2"h)

A grand large scale Louis Philippe antique French gold leaf mirror from Auxerres, France circa 1875. The bold geometric pattern of the frame seen in this antique mirror is related to the famous mirrors made in the town Auxerres located southwest of Paris. During the nineteenth century Auxerres enjoyed a reputation as designing and fabricating mirrors and glass of the highest quality. Notice the reverse of this mirror to see the construction similar to the backs of armoires and cabinets constructed during this same time period. The random pattern of wear on the geometric pattern of the frame revealed the gold leaf, red rouge and cream in a highly attractive way. The original mirror glass features the customary array of speckles, spots and fogging that makes antique mirror so desirable.
