Antique French Louis Philippe Walnut Chest Commode circa 1870

The smaller scale of this antique French Louis Philippe walnut chest of drawers or commode circa 1870 makes it especially desirable as a bed side chest or for use beside a sofa. Designed during the reign of King Louis Philippe (1830-1848) in France using walnut with the most striking pattern of grain. Please notice the manner in which the skilled cabinet maker chose to sheathe the entire front of the chest in walnut. The perfectly matched grain flows across every surface to create the illusion of a single piece of timber. Please be sure to enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see the marvelous appeal of this antique French walnut chest. Having four drawers, three with brass knobs and escutcheons, the topmost drawer is actually concealed as it has a profile known as "cavetto" from the original Italian that is a hallmark of Louis Philippe design. This top drawer is opened by pulling gently on the left and right sides to access the interior. The entire French chest commode is elevated on bracket feet with a distinctive shape of foot seen on Louis Philippe furnishings.
