(On Hold) Antique French Louis Philippe Walnut Buffet Credenza Sideboard circa 1870

The immediate appeal of this antique French walnut Louis Philippe buffet credenza sideboard circa 1870 lies in the simplicity of its profile. Notice that the stright lines of the antique walnut buffet enclose the marvelous organic pattern of the walnut set within each cabinet door as an enclosed panel. This placement of the highly grained walnut by the cabinetmaker ensures that it is the focus of the credenza. The technique is known as book matching or butterfly wing arrangement and has always been a goal of fine craftsmen when presented with unusually grained timber. This example has an additional distinction as the front corners are cut at a fourty five degree angle and extend vertically down to the lower apron. The top of the walnut buffet follows this profile with cut front corners as it leads the eye to the shaped feet which elevate the entire credenza. A distinctive profile was developed during the reign of King Louis Philippe in France (1830-1848) and these feet are an excellent example. Behind the cabinet doors lies a shelf to double the available storage space and the two drawers also open fully to provide excellent storage. Striking walnut, clean lines, modern sensibility.
