Antique French Louis Philippe Walnut Chest of Drawers with Marble Top circa 1850

The extraordinary pattern of walnut seen across the front of this antique French Louis Philippe chest of drawers circa 1850 commands attention as it demonstrates the skillful artistry of French cabinet making. Please be sure to enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see how carefully the individual sections of highly figured burl walnut have been placed across the entire facade. The bold pattern stems from the unusual growth of the walnut that created an organically asymmetric outcome revealed when the walnut tree was cut down. Always prized and sought after the burl walnut covers every surface to allow the full flow of the pattern to cascade from top to bottom. Note the delicious honeyed caramel colour of the walnut achieved by years of age and polishing. There are four drawers to this antique French chest with three drawers opened by using the gilded bronze pulls. The upper drawer is pulled open by gently pulling on either side of the drawer beneath the marble as the curved profile will not accommodate hardware. This unique shape of this top drawer is known as a "cavetto" after the original Italian and gives a distinctive flavour to Louis Philippe furnishings. The marble top has a beautiful mottled grey appearance along with a grooved edge around the perimetre edge with curved front corners that correspond to the shape of the walnut chest.
