Louis XV Style Antique French Painted Gilded Armchair circa 1875

A beautiful antique French Louis XV style painted and gilded fauteuil (open armchair) circa 1875. Please notice the classic form created during the Regence period (1715-1723) where the soft curves flow across all areas of the chair. Please note how the background is painted in a rich dark blue green and the foreground, full of intricate motifs and designs, is gilded. Also, the symmetrical nature of the chair is a hallmark of the Regence style. Each of the rounded shoulders are softened with a foliate and sea scroll design. The sides are gently curved and frame the seat back by meeting underneath in the same gentle curve. The arms move forward from the back and each have a generously flared front that descend to the front of the seat frame. It is a pleasure to see the carved details that emphasize the movement of the arms and how they connect to the overall frame in a manner that is both pleasing and functional. All four of the legs have a lovely cabriole form with the front two legs embellished with a well defined flower blossom in high relief carving. The front profile of the chair has a slight serpentine shape that adds to the overall grace of the form. The delicate basket weave motif scene on the front apron of the chair is typical of the Regence period. The sides have a gentle curve that flows into the back legs and completes the sensuous quality these chairs possess. Because these chairs were often used in the centre of rooms it was crucial that they be considered elegant and balanced when viewed from any direction as well as being comfortable. The gorgeous upholstery is Italian with a geometric design and includes a separate lumbar pillow in the same fabric.
