Massive Art Deco Jean Perzel Style Torchiere Floor Lamp circa 1935

This Art Deco vintage French torchiere floor lamp uplight circa 1935 with a nickel metal finish has a surprisingly massive scale. Made famous by the French designer Jean Perzel, uplight floor lamps in the torchiere configuration were used extensively across Europe beginning in the late 1920's. Marvelous in providing illumination that bounces off a ceiling instead of using a chandelier or table lamps Art Deco torchieres changed the way an Art Deco interior appeared both in photographs and in daily living. The grand scale of this piece indicates it was probably used in a public space as it measures 27 1/2" across at the top. Please enlarge the photographs to see the unusual features that give this Art deco lamp its desirability. Standing on a circular plinth base this Art Dco floor lamp features a tapering column with three horizontal rings defining the ascencion. The light bowl is made from one sheet of metal that was pressed to create the three dimensional effect of a bowl with a broad lip. The interior of the bowl retains the original lighting fixture for three standard base bulbs. The on/off swith is located on the column and stands at a height easily reached when walking by the torchiere. This is a terrific artifact from the French Art Deco period that remains eminently functional and boldly attractive for a modern interior.
