Mid Century Modern Italian Walnut Buffet Credenza circa 1950

A striking mid century modern Italian burl walnut buffet credenza circa 1950 featuring the original brass hardware. This unique Italian cabinet has a surprising façade with a straight front flanked by front sides that slant toward the back. Designed to take advantage of the extraordinary visual power of the burl walnut timber the entire front of the cabinet is sheathed in this material. Please notice how the artisan chose to lay the burl walnut to create a matched pattern of organic intensity to emphasize the swirling movement. In contrast the slanted fronts and sides are crafted from maple and defined by vertical grooves in an entirely geometric manner. The lighter color of the maple also plays against the dark and dramatic richness of the burl walnut to further the difference in design. Elevated on four tapered legs that are joined by a gently curved stretcher this Italian credenza buffet appears to float in space with a sense of light elegance. Please enlarge the photographs to see the use of brass that caps each leg, the brass that wraps the join of the stretcher to the legs and the slightly rounded profile of the knobs used to access the interior storage space. Inside the cabinet is lined in lemonwood and reveals three drawers and three cabinet doors along with shelves chosen to maximize the available storage. 19 3/4" side depth
