Neoclassical French Two Arm Solid Brass Wall Sconce circa 1900

The grand scale of this solid brass two arm Neoclassical French antique sconce circa 1900 showcases the eternal appeal of symmetry and balance. The oval shaped backplate resembles a shield with a raised border edge incorporating scrolls in a convex shape. Both the left and right arm are also scrolled in shape and extend forward from the backplate as they originally were made to hold burning candles away from the wall. Notice how the arms are made from facing scrolls for visual interest and extend away to the side for extra reach. Each arm supports a circular bobeche with the round candle nozzle on top. Of course the circular bobeche or drip pan was there to capture melting wax as the candles burned down. The polished surface of the brass was chaosen for its reflective ability and the darker crevices add visual depth and beauty to the brass.
